Aligning with your soul to live a more joyful life

The secret of living a life where you feel inspired, happy, creative and joyful is all about being aligned with your soul.

Many of us have this feeling deep inside that there must be more – more to life, more to us and even more than the eye can see. It can range in intensity from a little niggle to an overwhelming fear that time is running out and that there must be a secret to life that everyone apart from us seems to know about.

It can show up as a feeling of dread each day before going to work, feeling like life is being sucked out of us, feeling numb, feeling anxious or unsettled, depressed, restless, tired or overwhelmed. These feelings are a message; it’s a signal that the body, mind and soul are out of alignment. If we don’t listen to these messages when they come, they tend to intensify – until ultimately life comes crashing down to make sure we start listening.

What does aligning with your soul mean?

When we are aligned with our soul it means that we understand and accept who we are. In other words, we embrace our authentic self. When we do that, we feel happy and confident in ourselves and embody who we truly are – recognising both our shadows AND our light.

We have no need for anyone else’s approval because we recognise that the only persons approval or permission we need is our own; all from a place of self-compassion, self-acceptance and self-love. It removes any worries about being judged, criticised or rejected – because we simply recognise that these are not our issues – but a reflection of where someone else is on their own journey.

When you’re aligned with your soul you set healthy boundaries, recognising what you need, as well as recognising the value in what you have to give.

6 Easy steps you can take to align with your soul

1. Listen to your inner guidance system

Your higher-self is knocking on the door asking you to listen to what they have to say. If you ask for guidance, they are happy to answer – but the key is listening or watching for the answers. You will get them, but if you’re too busy to notice you’ll miss it.

Some say that prayer is asking for help and meditation is listening for the answer. Meditation is a great way to listen to your inner guidance system, even if you don’t get the answers whilst you’re actually meditating, you’ll find the universe has a way of delivering them shortly thereafter - but remember to keep looking.

If you find meditation challenging, or need more support to access your inner guidance system, then hypnosis is a wonderful tool that provides tools and techniques to slow down the internal chatter and listen to what our higher-self has to say.

2. Slow down

Most of us in the 21st century are running on overload; multi-tasking, spending long hours in front of a screen of some sorts, often with our nervous system in overload and stuck in the fight/flight/flee response.

From this place of sensory overwhelm we often forget a) that we have a choice in everything we do or don’t do (inaction is also a choice) and b) what makes us feel good.

Have you ever taken a vacation and found that when you relax you get great ideas for things that you could do, be or create? That’s because you’ve slowed down and allowed your inner guidance system to start communicating with you.

Getting out in nature, disconnecting from tech, exercising, reading are all great ways to slow down. If you find that once you’ve slowed down you get flashes of inspiration – that’s your higher-self communicating with you. If you follow those messages, you’ll move into a greater sense of alignment with you soul.

3. Spend more time having fun

There are so many reasons why having fun is good for aligning with your soul. Firstly there have been numerous scientific studies which show that laughter and play are good for physical health; improving the stress response, and helping us to cope better. Having fun can give us more energy, and generate more vitality. When we do that, we feel happier and brighter.

Have you ever heard the phrase time flies when you’re having fun? That’s because we can enter a flow state where things feel aligned and inspired. Having fun engages the creative part of our brain (and slows down the brain waves in a similar way to hypnosis and meditation) – we are able to find solutions to problems and see things from a different perspective.

Pay attention to what you enjoy – what lights you up? Spend more time doing that!

4. Cultivate self-love

Your soul does not want you to beat yourself up, put yourself down or reject any parts of you. No matter what you’ve been through you are not broken, you are not incomplete – you are a beautiful, whole being of love and light. You are enough exactly as you are.

Self-love looks like accepting and understanding your emotions, recognising your personal needs and self-value, or feeling empathy for others. When you have self-love, you recognise that not only are you more than the sum of your thoughts – you are actually the control room for them, and you can choose to think positive, happy, empowering thoughts about yourself, and the world around you.

5. Surround yourself with high vibe people

There’s a saying that you are the sum of the company you keep. What this means is that we tend to vibrate at the frequency (and accordingly think at the same level) as the people we hang out with the most. If you find that the people you spend time with are negative and critical, then they are likely to be characteristics that we embody.

Instead, connect with other lightworkers and high vibrational beings who see your value, and will support you as you listen to your soul’s calling and come back into alignment with it.

6. Get professional support

No man is an island - there are some things that we all need support with. Having a trusted network of professionals will help you to get the right support if you feel like you’re straying off of your path.

Professional support might take the form of a therapist, life coach, energy healer, kinesiologist, osteopath, masseuse – or something else entirely. Whilst you won’t need to see all of your support team all of the time, knowing who to turn to when you need professional help will save you time and energy when you do.
